Fistulas (Lower Lip) vs. Fistulas (Upper Lip)

Left picture: In this case congenital fistulas of the lower lip are present; they can be observed isolated or combined in 0.5 % of the cleft lip palate patients. They must be removed completely, including the corresponding gland. Right picture: In this case so-called congenital fistulas of the upper lip are present which are similar to the preauricular fistulas; during excision, a possible branchig has to be considered to avoid recurrences.

In both patients fistulas are visible on the lips. Left picture: In this schoolchild the fistulas are distributed symmetrically on each side of the lower lip which is deformed by the fistula openings and the surrounding border. Right picture: In this infant three fine fistula openings are recognizable close to the nose, but not disfiguring the contours of the upper lip.
