Cleft Lip vs. Facial Cleft

Cleft Lip vs. Facial Cleft

Left picture: In this pathology the diagnosis is a total cleft lip palate of the left side. Right picture: Here, the diagnosis is an oblique facial cleft of the right side. In severe cases of facial clefts there is an interruption in the continuity of the soft tissues and of the facial bone from the mouth to the eye. In the presented case the soft tissues are deficient, which explains the described characteristics.

In both infants a broad cleft lip is present on the right or the left side. On looking closely both clefts are similar concerning the defect of the right or the left lip. Left picture: The insertion of the shifted nasal wing doesn´t lie as laterally and as high as in the contralateral picture. Right picture: Apart from the striking position of the nasal wing, the line of the lid gap on the right side is tilted to the midline in comparison with the left eye, and the nasal wing is shifted in the cranial direction.
