Preparation (Thyroglossal Duct Cyst)

Sometimes, a duct may be found running from the cyst up to the cecal foramen of the basal tongue, as shown in this preparation of a 1-month-old infant with a relatively small thyroglossal duct cyst (diameter 1.5 cm) and a 2 to 3 cm long duct with tissue of the basal tongue. Anterior fistulas at the level of the cyst are acquired and due to a former infection. Because occasionally embryonic residuals of the former duct may be found along its former course, the middle of the hyoid and the midline soft tissue must be excised up to the base of the tongue according to Sistrunk (prophylaxis of recurrences and of carcinoma).
