Natural History 1 (Intussusception)

anus_10_n.jpg: Operative findings in a 9-month-old girl with surgical abdomen. The segment of the small intestine which is visible on the left side has been reduced. It has a bluish to dark-red color, its surface is rough and its shape slack. On the right side there is the vital small intestine with increased volume. This case is an example of the natural history in a far progressed acute invagination. The reduced intestinal loop on the left has a partially irreversible loss of blood supply. The residual intussusceptum lies within the lumen of the vital intestine on the right side. Notice the site of the beginning of the residual invagination. In this case a resection of intestine is unavoidable.
