Minimal Form (Omphalocele)
Figure miss_10_n.jpg: 1-day-old girl with a slightly thickened umbilical cord. The cord ligation has been performed at the periphery.
The content of the swelling is hardly recognizable due to blurring of the sac.
It is a case analogous to miss_9_n.jpg.
miss_10_n.jpg is a very small omphalocele, and due to the blurring of the sac not recognizable as such. In unawareness of the malformation a ligation of the cord can be performed at the level of the omphalocele with disastrous sequels for the newborn, such as necrosis of the involved intestinal sement and peritonitis.
(see chapter 'swelling of the groin and navel').
