MRI and CT in Hydrocephalus

Figure hydr_24a_n.jpg: Horizontal MRI slice of a 5-month-old infant with a congenital hydrocephalus due to an aqueductal stenosis. Notice the discrepancy between the decreased parenchyma and the dilated and rounded lateral ventricles. The percentage of the ventricular surface in relation to the whole brain surface may amount to 39-52 % (95 % confidence interval) in the newborn with overt hydrocephalus. Figure hydr_24b_n.jpg: The same slice on CT, 7 months following shunt surgery. The lateral ventricles exhibit a nearly normal shape and are only slightly dilated. White structure = part of the ventricular catheter.
