Postoperative Urine Collection

Closed systems of postoperative urine collection for catheters and splints introduced during surgery. The bags on the right and on the left contain normal urine while the urine in the middle bag has a reddish color. It concerns a girl of kindergarten age in whom a splint was introduced in both ureters (bag on the right and on the left side) and a catheter in the bladder (bag in the middle) during implantation of refluxing ureters. Postoperative and postinterventional hematuria are important differential diagnoses of hematuria mainly if there are no obvious traces of the former intervention, as for instance after a percutaneous renal biopsy. Already minimal amounts of blood are sufficient to stain the urine as in the presented case. Prior to surgery or an intervention the parents should be informed about this possibility.
