Lateral Chest X-ray (Additional Examinations Diaphragmatic Hernia)

Additional lateral chest x-ray in a newborn with respiratory distress syndrome. In the whole left thoracic cavity numerous rounded clearings with a small annular shadow are visible. No lung structures are recognizable. In the abdomen there is a large clearance with sharp limits. The diagnosis is pleuroperitoneal diaphragmatic hernia with nearly total displacement of the intestine in the thoracic cavity. The air-filled intestinal loops appear in the transverse section as rounded clearings with a fine annular shadow. In the abdomen x-ray a large stomach filled up with air is visible.
