Gastroschisis vs. Omphalocele

Left picture: The diagnosis is a gastroschisis. Right picture: Here, a small to middle-sized omphalocele is present. Left picture: The pathological changes of the intestine and the normal insertion of the umbilical cord are additonal characteristics of a gastroschisis which allows a differentiation of a gastroschisis from an omphalocele.

Again, two newborns are presented having an anomaly which is recognizable from the outside and lies in front of the anterior abdominal wall or the midline. In addition, the two malformations differ from each other as follows: Left picture: The broad intestinal loops protrude on the right side from a paramedian cleft beside the insertion of the navel. Right picture: The umbilical cord starts eccentrically from the periphery of the envelope; the sac is already white and opaque; therefore, the content is not visible any more.
