Hirschsprung´s Disease vs. Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis

Hirschsprung´s Disease vs. Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis

Left picture: The clinical diagnosis is a chronic ileus in Hirschsprung´s disease; clinically, a low obstructive ileus of another cause might also be present. Right picture: This clinical presentation corresponds to peristalsis waves of the stomach running from the left upper to the right middle belly due to a hypertrophic pyloric stenosis.

In both 2-month-old infants protruding intestinal loops are visible. Left picture: On looking closely, the intestinal loops are distributed over the whole abdomen and are arranged in a transverse as well as in a longitudinal direction. Right picture: Intestinal loops are encountered only in the upper belly, are arranged in the longitudinal direction of the abdomen, and their shape is changing constantly. Compare the arrangement of the loops in the upper and the lower picture on the same patient.
