Isolated Cleft Lip Palate vs. Syndromic Cleft Lip Palate

Left picture: A patient with an isolated cleft lip palate. Right picture: This newborn has a syndromic type of cleft which specifically in this case is based on a partial trisomy 13. In every case of cleft lip palate, one has to look for combined malformations which cannot always be attributed to a specific syndrome as in this case.

Both Neonates have a wide cleft lip on inspection from the outside. Left picture: Except for the cleft lip, the general examination of the newborn yields no other pathological findings. Right picture: In this patient with cleft lip palate cyanotic lips and the necessity of feeding by a gastric tube are obvious. In addition, a hypospadias on clinical examination, a complex congenital heart defect on work-up examinations and retardation on follow-up are present.
