Hematuria, Trauma to the Kidney vs. Postoperative Hematuria

Left picture: In this case, a hematuria following a blunt renal trauma is present. There is only a moderate relation between the amount of hematuria (microscopical hematuria versus hematuria) and the severity of injury to the kidney. The bloody urine does not point to the specific cause of it. However, the history, additional symptoms, and clinical signs are useful. Right picture: In this case a hematuria is present, which is drained by a suprapubic catheter inserted in the bladder during reimplantation surgery of the ureters and renal urine drained by ureteral catheters inserted on the left and right side; the urine of the right side has a stronger concentration and/or displays a microscopic hematuria. For the clinical presentation of hematuria already relatively small amounts of blood are needed in the urine. Hematurias, which are caused by diagnostic and therapeutisch interventions are an important differential diagnosis of hematuria in the daily clinical work. Depending on the chosen proceeding it is possible, that any indications of it are missing from the outside.

Left picture: Urine in a glass container, which is discolored dark-red. The child has sustained a blunt abdominal trauma. Right picture: Three bags of a closed system to collect urine of different origin following surgery in a toddler. The urine on the left and the right side is yellow and has a different brightness, and the urine in the middle is dark-red with a more discolored sediment at the bottom and in the center of the bag.
